Teens struggle with a variety of life difficulties. They may experience overwhelming feelings related to school, family, peers, etc. These overwhelming feelings may result in challenging behaviors, isolation, avoidance, and many other behaviors that are difficult for their caregiver, teachers, and other adults in their lives. Similar to adults, children and teens may find it difficult to express and recognize their emotions. When they are unable to express or cope with these emotions, they can begin to experience symptoms of depression, anxiety, a decrease in self-esteem, a decline in academic performance, and many more. There are several challenges children and teens face as they grow into adults. They can experience pressures from multiple sources in their lives and this can have an impact on their overall well-being and mental health. Therapy can help teens learn and develop tools , which can help manage those unwanted or difficult feelings and behaviors, and learn how to cope with day-to-day challenges life may present. Therapy offers an opportunity for the child or teen to express themselves openly and genuinely in a safe and supportive environment.

One important factor of therapy and treatment when working with children is the involvement of the caregivers. The therapeutic process is a team approach, especially in the case of a minor. Caregivers play a major role in their teen's environment and healing process. This involvement could range from providing parenting skills, family therapy, or therapist assigned interactions with the teen outside of therapy.
